Nearly 20 nuclear power sites have been or are currently being decommissioned across the country and between five and ten additional plants could close within the next five years. The small or rural communities that host these sites will face critical socioeconomic challenges with the loss of tax revenue, skilled workers, and a major regional economic driver.
Recently, with the support of the U.S. Economic Development Administration, Smart Growth America, the Nuclear Decommissioning Collaborative, the NADO Research Foundation, and the Center for Creative Land Recycling launched the Nuclear Closure Communities Technical Assistance program. This program is designed to help communities better prepare and plan for a post-nuclear power plant future as more plants announce plans for decommissioning in the upcoming years. Through this program, the team will provide free guidance and analysis, offer a set of tools, and build a supportive community of practice to better position the municipalities and regions bracing for this dislocation.
